If you're considering Brazilian laser hair removal, you probably already know it's effective. What most websites don't tell you is what the actual experience is like: how the room is set up, what you wear (or don't), how long the appointment takes, what it feels like, and what to do for the week before so you walk in confident instead of nervous.
I've been performing Brazilian laser hair removal for over a decade and now in Chicago. After thousands of sessions I can tell you: the awkward part is almost always the anticipation, not the appointment itself. This guide is what I wish every first-time patient could read before booking.
What Is Brazilian Laser Hair Removal? (Brazilian vs. Bikini)
There's no industry-wide standard, so the same word can mean slightly different things at different clinics. At our Streeterville practice, "Brazilian" means everything: full pubic area, labia, and back to the perianal area. "Bikini" means just the area that would show outside a standard swimsuit. "Extended bikini" sits in between, covering the bikini line plus a bit more on the sides and front but stopping short of the labia.
When you arrive, just tell us what you actually want treated. We'll ask if there's anything you specifically want left untouched.
What Happens at a Brazilian Laser Hair Removal Appointment
The treatment room is private and door-locked. You'll undress from the waist down, and you'll have a draping sheet to cover everything not being treated. I will only expose the area I'm currently lasering. If you're modest, the actual time you're "exposed" during the appointment is probably less than you imagine, and only one small section at a time.
You'll be in a few positions during the session: lying back with knees up for the front in a "frog pose" and on your side or with one knee out for intimate areas. None of it is held for long. The whole appointment, including the positioning changes, takes about 20 to 30 minutes for a Brazilian. The actual laser time is closer to 10 minutes.
A few logistics that come up:
- You can keep your top on. This is the lower body only.
- Period? It's fine. Wear a tampon if you'd like. It does not affect the laser. We treat plenty of patients during their cycle.
- Should I worry about my appearance? No. I'm a clinician looking at hair density and skin tone, not your body. After a few thousand of these, I assure you it is genuinely routine on my end.
- Pregnancy. Laser hair removal during pregnancy is up to the decision of the patient and will be noted in the chart during intake.
If you have any specific worries before booking, call us. We can walk through the whole flow on the phone before you commit.
How to Prepare for Brazilian Laser Hair Removal
Brazilian laser hair removal works best when the follicle is under the skin. So:
- The day of: It's preferable that you shave the same day. Be sure to shave the entire area you want treated, all the way to the skin. Don't trim, don't leave stubble. Use a fresh razor.
- The day of: No lotions, oils, or deodorants on the area. Come clean and dry.
- Two weeks before: No waxing, plucking, threading, or epilator devices. These pull the follicle out, which is what the laser needs to target. You can shave between sessions as much as you want.
- Two weeks before: No fresh sun exposure or self-tanner on the bikini area. (Yes, really, even there. If you're planning a vacation tan, schedule treatment around it.) If you have any self tanner it must be exfoliated.
Optional comfort prep:
- Take 400 to 600mg of ibuprofen 30 to 60 minutes before your appointment if you're sensitive to discomfort.
- While not a requirement, you are welcome to wear loose-fitting clothing to your appointment. You'll be more comfortable on the way home.
Does Brazilian Laser Hair Removal Hurt?
I'll tell you what most clinics won't: yes, but it can also depend on your pain tolerance. The Brazilian area is more sensitive than most other places we treat. The skin is thinner, the hair is coarser, and the follicles sit closer together.
That said, modern lasers are dramatically more comfortable than what existed even five years ago. Our Cynosure Elite IQ uses Zimmer cooling, which blasts cold air on the skin in real time. Most patients describe the sensation as a quick warm rubber-band snap with each pulse, lasting just long enough that you say "ow" and then it's done.
On a 0 to 10 scale, most first-time Brazilian patients rate it a 4 or 5. By session three or four, that drops to a 2 or 3, because there's already significantly less hair, and less hair means less heat absorbed by the skin. By session six, it's often barely noticeable.
If you do find your first session intense, we can adjust by slowing the pulse rate or reducing the fluence (heat).
You won't be the first person to say "this is more than I expected" and you won't be the last. We adjust.
How Many Sessions Does a Brazilian Laser Hair Removal Take?
Most patients need six to eight sessions for a full Brazilian, spaced four to eight weeks apart. The Brazilian area sometimes runs slightly higher on the session count than legs or underarms, because:
- Hormonally-driven hair (which the bikini area has more of than, say, your forearms) cycles in and out of growth phase less predictably
- The follicles are denser, so each session removes a smaller percentage of total follicles
- Coarse hair often means a small percentage of follicles needs a second hit
After the initial series, most patients come in for an annual touch-up to catch the new growth that hormones produce over time. For a deeper look at session counts across treatment areas, see our guide on how many laser hair removal sessions you actually need.
How Much Does Brazilian Laser Hair Removal Cost in Chicago?
Pricing in Chicago for a single Brazilian session ranges roughly $175 to $400, with most reputable clinics in the $225 to $300 range. Our pricing falls in that range. Packages of six sessions almost always offer a meaningful discount over per-session pricing.
A few things to watch for when you compare quotes:
- Is the price for a true Brazilian or just a bikini line? Some clinics quote $175 for "Brazilian" but mean bikini. Ask specifically.
- Is consultation free? Reputable clinics offer free consultations. If a clinic charges $50 to $75 just to talk to you, factor that in.
Brazilian Laser Hair Removal Aftercare
Right after treatment:
- Mild redness and follicle bumps: Normal. Lasts 30 minutes to a few hours.
- A warm sensation, like mild sunburn: Normal. Cool compresses or aloe gel help.
- Tiny scab-like dots over follicles a day or two later: Normal. Don't pick them. They flake off in 5 to 7 days.
- Hair appearing to "grow" 5 to 14 days after treatment: This is actually the dead hair shedding. Gently exfoliate to help it release. Do not pluck or wax.
Skip these for 24 hours:
- Hot tubs, saunas, steam rooms
- Long hot showers (warm is fine)
- Intense workouts that cause heavy sweating
- Intimacy (give the area a day to recalm)
- Tight pants or thongs if you can avoid them
For two weeks: SPF 30 or higher on the area if it'll see any sun (relevant if you're heading to a beach or pool).
Call us if you see:
- Blistering or open sores
- Significant darkening of the skin (post-inflammatory pigmentation)
- Pain that worsens after 24 hours rather than improves
These are uncommon and we adjust settings to prevent them, but if anything looks wrong, we want to hear about it the same day.
Brazilian Laser Hair Removal for Darker Skin Tones
The pelvic skin tends to be slightly darker than the rest of the body even on lighter Fitzpatrick types. That makes appropriate laser selection important here regardless of overall skin tone. Our Cynosure system has both Alexandrite (755nm) and Nd:YAG (1064nm) wavelengths, plus a Skintel melanin reader that calibrates each session to your actual melanin density.
If you have darker skin overall (Fitzpatrick IV, V, or VI), we have a more detailed guide to laser hair removal for skin of color that addresses what to look for in any provider.
Why Choose a Single-Provider Clinic for Your Brazilian
Brazilian laser hair removal is a vulnerable appointment. The whole experience is better when you see the same person every time. You build trust, you stop being anxious by session two, and your provider learns the specifics of how your skin responds. Settings get refined, comfort improves, and the whole thing becomes routine.
I treat every Brazilian patient personally. You will not see a rotating cast of technicians, and you will not be handed off to a new hire mid-package. If you want to know more about how we operate, here's a bit about me and the clinic, or learn more on our about page.
